and Oil Analyzers INC.

Because they recognize that as many as 80
percent of machine failures are due to insufficient or excess lubrication, or
even the wrong type of lubricant altogether, plant managers, fleet managers and
maintenance specialists frequently turn to oil analysis programs. These programs
allow for an early diagnosis of potential problems which in turn can prevent
equipment failure and save time and money.
The above diagram details the steps in a
typical fleet management oil analysis program. Equipment continually generates
lubricant samples which are then sent along to the analysis lab. After analyzing
the samples, the lab can generate diagnostic reports to be utilized by
maintenance personnel or maintenance summary reports to be utilized by a
management team. These reports enable both the maintenance personnel and
management teams to make educated decisions regarding the operation and
maintenance schedules of their equipment. This in turn will allow the equipment
to be closely monitored, managed and controlled and will require more sampling
and more lab analysis to extend component life and establish sound maintenance
schedules.
Oil analysis can provide a wealth of
information regarding equipment and lubrication requirements. The following are
some of the detectable failures that can be observed with spectrometric oil
analysis
Detectable Failures by Oil Analysis:
• Cylinder damage in reciprocating engines,
including worn or broken rings
and bands, scored or scuffed piston and cylinder walls, damaged piston pins,
plug bottoms, broken valve springs and loose or defective valve guides.
• Worn, misaligned or broken antifriction bearings and retainers
• Worn, misaligned or scored gears
• Worn or scored journal bearing surfaces
• Cracked or broken reciprocating engine master rod bearing shells and splines
• Slowly progressive failures which add to the wear metals content of the fluid
system, either directly by relative motion between mating surfaces or
indirectly by misalignment
