Q. I am interested in the new
Super Shift Transmission Fluid for use in my Dirt Late Model. We
have currently been using AMSOIL
ATF with no complications. Our racing transmission is a Falcon,
manufactured by Winters Performance Products. It has two forward
gears (3rd and 4th) and reverse. It has clutches but it is not a
manual transmission. You engage the clutch in order for the car
to move then once the car is moving you can then shift (without
using the clutch) into direct (or 4th). The car is powered by an
all-aluminum 415ci 750 hp motor. Question: Is there any benefit
in using the new racing fluid over the ATF and if so would you
explain? I was just concerned about the friction between the
gears with this much torque and horsepower.
A. The new Super Shift ATF is
ideally suited for high horsepower, high torque applications
such as yours. This product promotes a positive shift and
minimizes or eliminates clutch plate slippage. The difference
between Super Shift and traditional Dexron III, Mercon, ATF+
type fluids is that traditional ATF’s promote smooth, chatter
free shifting. In order for them to do this they allow for a
sliding clutch engagement. Super Shift is a non-slip
transmission fluid and promotes positive clutch engagement.
Super Shift is not rated for passenger car use and may cause
erratic shift patterns or chatter in the “Grocery Getter”, but
for your racecar it is the best choice!
